Accountability - the power to transform your business

Remember that feeling the last time you attended an inspiring conference or heard an engaging speaker at an event?  You were excited to be there–at least it was a day out away from the normal business day-to-day.

You’d learnt loads. Saw things in a different way. Networked with other people about how to market and grow your business. You'd written clear notes about how to apply what you’ve learnt to your specific business. You can even see the results projected in your mind.

However, you then get back to work and your daily whirlwind of activities. Responding to your client's needs goes back to being your priority. Though you still have in your mind to get on to implementing what you’ve learnt very ‘soon’. But ‘soon’ never comes. There’s no one to remind you of what you agreed to do as you only agreed to it with yourself. You don’t have true accountability.

I could give many other scenarios some of which you would relate to more than others, where you may have good intentions to develop your business further and promote it more...but a business doesn’t run on good intentions. It’s run by taking action.

Building momentum takes focus and effort

Everyone with their own business will be very familiar with the highs and lows of getting stuff done on your business, planning ahead, marketing, not just dealing with the day-to-day work.

Some days everything seems to go right and you’re powering along. Then others...it’s a struggle just to do the daily grind; to achieve the things you have to do every day to keep the business going. 

It’s in those latter situations that marketing can be the furthest thing from your mind when actually it needs to be at the forefront. Too often I’ve seen businesses wait until they are desperate for customers or clients before thinking about their marketing. This can often be too late.

Of course these days you can just go to the Internet and find out all you need to know, but whilst this sounds good, the problem is it's not always easy to know if it's relevant for your business. So you can end up getting caught in a cycle of going to workshops, listening to webinars and talks, reading lots of blogs and advice...but still feel like you are getting nowhere.

Between distraction and action lies accountability

So what's the solution? The key so often is accountability. Take this from a recent Forbes article:

"Research by the International Coach Federation has shown that, of small business owners that have hired a business coach, 70% have seen increased work performance, 86% have seen a return on investment and an impressive 99% of entrepreneurs were happy that they made the decision to hire a business coach."

As business owners you do whatever you want.  That’s part of the draw for running your own business. You are not beholden to anyone else. However, this has fundamental drawbacks. You can easily end up focusing on the work you love or that’s easier first rather than working on your business development. And in today's connected world there are too many distractions. Everything from social media, reading blogs and emails (the irony of you reading this is not lost on me!) to even what we might consider our normal work. 

And that’s not even to mention the constant, usually negative internal dialogue we have going in our heads distracting us even further.

It doesn’t matter how disciplined you are–or think you are–if you don’t have a strong level of accountability in your life you are setting yourself up to fail.
